Before the Show
We decided to do something related to Valentines Day which was great since relationships are my specialty.
I was a little nervous. But, I’d done internet radio shows before. Plus, I knew Steve from grad school, so I felt pretty comfortable. We even carpooled to the KABC studio in Culver City together. But, I have to admit when we drove up to the studio I started to get more nervous.
At the Studio
First of all Steve had to give the secret password (well not exactly, but kind of) through the intercom at the security gate. Then we met the show’s producer, Debbie Payne (who looked like she should be on television). Then we walked past the KLOS hallway and ran into a DJ coming out of the studio as we were going in. And right before we walked in to record I asked Debbie how many listeners the show had. She let me know they were just beginning to build their audience, so there were probably only about 20,000 (oh my).
Once we were in the recording studio, the sound engineer set up our microphones. While he was doing sound checks, we talked about the format for the show. We would have four segments about 10-12 minutes each with breaks for commercials. When it was time to start, Debbie put her hand in the air and counted down while she gestured with her fingers (3-2-1) and then we were recording.
On the commercial breaks, we chatted about what was coming up in the next segment. Plus, the sound engineer kept coming in to readjust my mic. He said I was speaking too softly at times. Or else I’d lean into the mic which made my voice too loud. Basically I needed to speak up and hold still.
Steve has had other radio shows so he’s quite the professional – high energy and very entertaining. And Debbie, well you can hear it in her voice — she sounds like she should be doing her own radio show.
It took me a while to get my rhythm. But, once I did, it was really fun. It felt just like my seminars or workshops – where I’m in the moment sharing what I think will be most helpful in the best way I can.
After the Show
When it was over, I was happy and relieved (see pic below). And I could tell I was excited too, because I was really chatty on the drive back. ;)
So, here it is, my KABC Radio debut, “Romance, What Kills it and How to Get it.” I hope you enjoy it. Just CLICK HERE to listen.
You know I’d love to hear your thoughts. :)
