Sometimes, I joke with my boyfriend and say, “I don’t have friends anymore.”
It’s not exactly true. But as we’ve gotten more serious, my focus has definitely shifted from friends, to him and our relationship.
We spend most of our free time together. And, we’re also starting to have more of a couple’s social life, where we’re spending time with others, together.
In Judith Wallerstein’s book, The Good Marriage*, she found that people in good marriages weren’t just close to each other, they were also connected to their communities.
They had outside interests and friends, for themselves and as a couple. In other words they didn’t live in isolation.
It’s important to make your relationship a priority. But, since no one person can ever meet all your needs (my boyfriend wants me to have more friends :), it’s also important to have other people you can turn to.
And not just for support. It’s good to have other people to have fun with, on your own and as a couple.
So, how do you and your partner stay connected to the rest of the world, on your own, or as a couple? Or do you?
